Bedford starts bypass procurement

21 Sep 11 Bedford Borough Council has called for initial bids for the construction of the final stage town’s bypass.

The 2.4km northern link is a £16.5m project that completes the Bedford Western Bypass to join the A428 to the west of the town with the A6 to the north.

The single carriageway road will have five roundabouts and two main structures, one of which is an overbridge crossing the Midland Mainline Railway.

Construction is scheduled to take 18 months, with completion slated for 2015.

In March the Homes and Communities Agency agreed to provide Bedford Borough Council with £5m towards the project costs because of the housing development potential that the scheme opens up. Some 1,200 new homes will follow completion of the bypass, as well as a new employment park.

The contract notice for the bypass is in our Contract Leads section.
