Broadway Malyan delivers $10bn Iraq masterplan

3 Aug 11 Broadway Malyan has delivered the concept masterplan for a US$10bn (£6.1bn) development in Sadr City, Iraq.

The client has invited design and build tenders, and is currently assessing submissions for the project, which involves a 17km² extension of Sadr City, Baghdad, and the creation of New Sadr City. The project is named 10×10 because of its predicted US$10bn value and ten-year delivery timeframe.

Director John Turner said: “The completion of the concept masterplan is a major milestone in the creation of a sustainable community with a strong identity for over 500,000 inhabitants and which will ease overcrowding in Sadr City, with successful delivery having depended on long-term and close partnering with the client, and the world-class skills, expertise and experience of our diverse team of international masterplanning experts.”

The practice’s team has worked closely with client the Mayoralty of Baghdad to deliver the concept masterplan, together with implementation tender documentation and detailed sector masterplans. It has also provided training in the UK for members of the client’s team.

Broadway Malyan secured the appointment through an open competition, which began in 2009 and, following the submission of a proposal in association with DATA Consultants, the practices were confirmed the preferred bidders in late 2009, with design work starting in April 2010.
