Chesterfield seeks developer for £50m retail scheme

3 Aug 11 Chesterfield Borough Council is advertising for a development partner for a £50m retail development project in the town centre.

The Northern Gateway project aims to extend the town centre, attract new shops and raise the quality of retailing in the town.

A contract notice has been published today in the EU Official Journal.

Council leader John Burrows said: “This project has the potential to give Chesterfield a real edge to its retail offering and will enable the town to compete with neighbouring cities like Sheffield, Derby and Nottingham.

“Chesterfield already has some fantastic shops, both independent and major retailers, plus we have our markets. We just need to extend the retail offer to give residents and visitors the whole package that fits with our desire to become a modern contemporary destination.”

The aim is to start construction work at the beginning of 2013, with completion before the end of 2015.
