The bottom of the tunnel will be built 72.6m below the ocean surface.
The tunnel is part of a planned network of highways to improve logistics in the region, which is a focus of Taiwanese investment. Xiamen was one of the first special economic zones set up in China some 30 years ago. Business used to be focused in the downtown island but has expanded into mainland areas.
