Construction apprenticeship growth lags behind other sectors

28 Oct 11 There was a small rise in the number of construction apprentices last year but it fell well behind the general rise in apprenticeships seen in other industries.

According to the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills, there were 26,560 apprenticeship starts during the 2010/2011 academic year in construction, planning and the built environment. This is 5.4% up on the 25,210 starts in 2009/10.

However, across all industries, new apprenticeships rose by more than 50%, from279,700 to 442,700.

Business secretary Vince Cable brushed over the discrepancy between construction and the wider economy and said he was “pleased that vital sectors like construction, manufacturing and engineering are continuing to back apprenticeships, despite tough economic times.”
