Design starts on major Swedish rail tunnel

6 Jun 12 Ramboll in cooperation with Vectura has won a €11m (£9m) contract to begin design work on a planned rail tunnel for Gothenburg.

The consortium of Ramboll and transport consultancy Vectura has been appointed by the Swedish Transport Administration to work on the West Link project.

Award of the contract will enable work to begin on one of the largest and most complex rail projects in Sweden. West Link comprises a train tunnel under central Gothenburg that will provide increased capacity, reduced travel times and improved access to the city centre.

Gothenburg Central Station will be converted from a terminus into an underground transit station and two new underground transit stations will be built.

The Ramboll project scope includes route planning for the line and connection points including within the tunnel.

"West Link is one of the largest and most complex rail projects in Sweden today. Working together with Vectura we can offer the customer the very best technical expertise in rail, tunnelling and ground engineering. We are extremely proud to have been appointed on such a prestigious and exciting project," said Börje Eriksson, division manager for Ramboll.

The project will be led by Ramboll in Sweden with some elements being undertaken in collaboration with international colleagues. Work on the scheme will begin immediately and continue until the end of 2014.
