John Holland team lands prison deal

18 Oct 12 A John Holland consortium is to build the AU$232m (£149m) Eastern Goldfields Regional Prison replacement in Western Australia.

The Assure Partners Consortium, which includes Leighton subsidiary John Holland together with Pindan, Capella Capital and Honeywell, has been appointed as the preferred bidder to design, construct and maintain the scheme.

The project involves construction of a new 350-bed prison at Kalgoorlie that will cater for both genders across all security ratings.

John Holland group managing director Glenn Palin, said: “The appointment of Assure Partners as the Preferred Respondent demonstrates our strength in and commitment to the social infrastructure sector. Social infrastructure is one of John Holland’s core competency areas, with our capacity ranging from educational facilities and correctional facilities to hospitals.”

In a first for the region, the new prison will be designed to engage Aboriginal prisoners in culturally appropriate programmes and courses.

The design phase of the project will start in January 2013, with construction due for completion by the fourth quarter of 2015.
