Client for the project is Luton Borough Council, which has just published a contract notice for the scheme.
The existing Junction 10a of the M1 is a large roundabout which connects the M1 Spur to Airport Way and London Road, linking Luton to the wider motorway network. The junction experiences significant queues and delays, particularly at peak travel times.
Improvements are required to cope with the existing traffic problems as well as provide capacity for increased demand arising from proposed employment and housing growth.
The council has secured growth area funding (GAF) from the Homes & Communities Agency in 2008 and has been working with the Highways Agency, Central Bedfordshire Council and consulting engineer URS to develop an appropriate engineering and environmental solution.
The upgrade will see the roundabout being removed and replaced by a continuous and widened carriageway between the M1 Junction 10 and A1081 Airport Way. New roundabouts and slip roads will give access to London Road.
