Mott MacDonald picked for Abu Dhabi mega scheme

19 Dec 11 Mott MacDonald is to provide construction supervision services for the infrastructure on a 9.6km2 lot within the AED7bn (£1.2bn) South Shamkha development in the United Arab Emirates.

Mott MacDonald will provide construction supervision for all Lot 3's infrastructure, which includes 80km of road works, a 110km wastewater system and 90km of potable water networks. There will also be a power distribution system – including both primary and secondary substations – as well as a storm water drainage network and provision for a telecommunication network.

Abu Dhabi General Services Company (Musanada) is developing the South Shamkha housing development, which is spread over 39km² and will provide new homes in 43 neighbourhoods. It is situated approximately 12km east of Abu Dhabi International Airport and about 50km from the city of Abu Dhabi. The aim is for the development to become a regional focal point for growth of the city. It is aligned with Abu Dhabi’s Vision 2030, the Emirate’s roadmap for economic progress.

The project is designed to provide sustainable communities with a special emphasis on clean, liveable space, large parks and pedestrian-friendly landscaped recreation areas. The design also includes shopping and retail areas, mosques, hospitals, clinics, health clubs, schools, playgrounds and entertainment areas.
