“By any reasonable measure the Games were a success and the big picture is that they have delivered value for money,” the National Audit Office has concluded.
It added: “The scale of the construction programme and the fact that it was completed on time and within budget is impressive.”
The report, titled The London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games: post-Games review, calls on the government to ensure the legacy is protected.
The NAO concludes: “In its new role of leading delivery of the legacy, the Cabinet Office must make the most of the momentum created by the success of the Games and will need to provide strong leadership and oversight of the progress made by the various organisations with legacy responsibilities.”
