PC Harrington wins Walkie Talkie groundworks contract

2 Sep 11 Canary Wharf Contractors has awarded the concrete pouring contract for the substructure of the 37-storey Walkie Talkie building to PC Harrington.

PC Harrington will pour 28,000 cubic metres of concrete for the building’s foundations at 20 Fenchurch Street, London. Contract value has not been revealed.

To support the concrete substructure, 6,000 tonnes of steel reinforcement is being installed.

Canary Wharf Contractors executive director Cormac MacCrann said: “20 Fenchurch Street has come a long way in a short space of time. Since construction began in January we have put in over 300 piles, finished the excavation, installed cranes and we’re rapidly preparing for the first of the concrete pours.”

The £300m project, designed by Uruguay architect Rafael Vinoly, is being jointly developed by Land Securities and Canary Wharf Group.

Completion to ground floor is scheduled for February 2012, with final completion of the 150m-high building due in 2014.
