Porr lands 15.5km German rail tunnel deal

2 Aug 11 A consortium led by Austrian contractor Porr has won the tunnelling contract for the Stuttgart 21 segment of the €4.1bn (£3.6bn) Germany’s Stuttgart-Ulm rail project.

Deutsche Bahn (DB) awarded the contract, which amounts to approximately a quarter of the value of the overall project. Porr will build 9.5km Filderstadt Tunnel and the 6km Ober-/Untertürkheim tunnel.

DB infrastructure officer Dr. Volker Kefer said that the award of the tunnel contract is an important milestone in the progress of the project.

The Stuttgart 21 section involves a total of 60km of new railway line and three new stations. Stuttgart’s main station will be converted from a terminus station into a through station.
