Queensland hospital contract awarded

25 Oct 12 Thiess has won a AU$108 million (£70m) Queensland Health contract to upgrade the Logan Hospital.

It will build a new multi-storey building adjacent to the existing hospital as part of Queensland Health’s plan to increase capacity and services at one of the busiest public hospitals in South East Queensland.

“Thiess is proud of its specialist health capability which is currently delivering great results for Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital, Townsville Hospital and now Logan,” said managing director Bruce Munro. “As a Queensland-based company, we’re particularly pleased to be delivering this expansion to hospital services in one of the state’s engine rooms of growth.”

The Logan Hospital expansion includes a new emergency department, a paediatric ward and a 24-bed rehabilitation ward with associated day therapy and a gym. The existing emergency department will be remodelled into a new ward with an elective surgery area including two procedure rooms.

“The project will generate approximately 250 jobs at its peak and also provide a welcome boost for subcontractors in South East Queensland,” said Thiess executive general manager construction Ric Buratto.

The hospital expansion is expected to be completed in early 2015.
