A referendum saw 59% vote against terminating the contract, with 41% in favour. More than 48% of eligible voters participated.

The Stuttgart 21 station is part of a high-speed rail scheme to provide a link to France and Austria. State prime minister Winfried Kretschmann said that he would have liked a different outcome of the vote. "But of course we accept the verdict against the S-21 Termination Act," he said.

Protests about the station construction had led to work being stopped a year ago.
