Safe use of lorry loaders DVD published

14 Oct 11 The Freight Transport Association (FTA) and the Association of Lorry Loader Manufacturers and Importers (ALLMI) have got together to produce a training DVD for users of lorry loader cranes.

The DVD covers the most common applications and uses of lorry loaders, with a strong emphasis on basic operating skills and awareness of the associated hazards.

It spells out the new requirements of BS7121, the British Standard Code of Practice for the Safe Use of Cranes: Part 4 – Lorry Loaders, and is intended to complement periodic and ongoing formal training and assessment.

The pack comprises two discs. Disc one includes three films featuring common applications.  Each film is between 30-36 minutes in duration and is broken down into five modules of between 6-10 minutes each.  Key topics covered include pre-operational checks, safe positioning and siting of the lorry loader, and operating tips.

Disc two contains follow-up material including practice questions to ensure understanding, and a copy of the ALLMI/CPA Best Practice Guide for the Safe Use of Lorry Loaders.

ALLMI technical director Alan Johnson said: “The script was produced following extensive consultation with our members and the FTA, and so the content is very much in line with the industry’s requirements, as well as best practice.”

The DVD is available from both the FTA and ALLMI.
