The cost of the buildings has been estimated at more than SR40bn (£6.5bn). The project, which will cover an estimated area of 400,000m2, will increase the capacity of the mosque.
It will enable more than 1.2 million worshippers to be accommodated. Increasing numbers of pilgrims, Umrah performers and visitors have been able to find room inside during busy times, particularly in Ramadan, Eids and Hajj periods.
