Sheffield University cleared to build new £81m engineering faculty

18 Dec 12 The University of Sheffield has been given planning permission for a new six-storey £81m building to house its engineering faculty.

The New Engineering Building, designed by architect RMJM, will be on the university’s Jessop East site and is the centrepiece of its development plans over the next decade

"We are committed to investing in a high quality, stunning building which will not only be the centrepiece for the Faculty of Engineering’s continued success, but will also be a source of enormous pride for the city,” said vice-chancellor Keith Burnett.

The university is now waiting for final approval from the secretary of state for the demolition of the Edwardian extension to the Jessop Hospital.

Construction on the new development is expected to begin in 2013, and the building should be operational by 2016.

As well as RMJM, the project team includes cost consultant Turner & Townsend, consulting engineer Arup and planning consultant Montagu Evans.
