Sika-Trocal restores 25 roofs back to full health

29 Nov 11 The hospital credited with being the birthplace of the NHS has had 25 of its roofs restored by Sika-Trocal, helping it to continue operating for many years to come.

Trafford General Hospital has grown substantially in the last 60 years and was in need of a face-lift. As part of an extensive maintenance and renewal programme, Sika-Trocal’s specialist contractor Sanderoof was appointed to carry out refurbishment works, all while ensuring the hospital was able to continue its day-to-day work. The work needed to be quick, efficient and cause as little disruption as possible.

The programme started in April 2010 and took just 11 months to complete, thanks to the fast installation process of the Sika-Trocal Type S range of single ply roofing membranes.

Sanderoof installed 1,300m2 of the Type S membrane, using the fast and efficient Sika-Trocal Disc System. The system utilises a series of 80 mm diameter PVC laminated discs, which mechanically attach the thermal insulation and membrane to the roof in one process – significantly reducing materials required and halving the installation time of a traditional mechanically fixed roof. Once the Disc System has been installed, the Type S membrane is simply unrolled over the substrate and the discs welded to the underside of the membrane to create a watertight roof.

Sanderoof also installed 3,500m2 of the adhered Type SGK system across multiple sized roofs, which were spread across the hospital’s sprawling estate.

Specified for a fast and simple application, Type SGK was deemed the most suitable solution for many of the roofs where an additional 100mm layer of insulation had to be installed. With an integral polyester fleece backing that helps mask the appearance of insulation board or timber deck joints, the Type SGK membrane is simply adhered to the substrate using Sika-Trocal adhesive.

Completed in March 2011, the 25 roofs at Trafford General Hospital were delivered within a short timeframe and to the highest standard. Offering exceptional weather proofing, durability and a simple installation process, Sika-Trocal has ensured that the many vital departments of Trafford General Hospital will enjoy unrivalled protection and a stylish finish to match.
