Spain’s TR wins Australian desalination doubling

9 Aug 11 A consortium led by Spain’s Tecnicas Reunidas (TR) has won a €350m (£300m) contract for expansion of a desalination plant in Western Australia. The expansion will provide 100 billion litres of drinking water a year.

The expansion of the Southern Seawater Desalination Plant at Binningup will be carried out by the Southern Seawater Alliance, made up of Tecnicas Reunidas, Valoriza Agua, AJ Lucas and Worley Parsons. The consortium shares  are 38% for TR, 38% for Valoriza Agua, and 19% and 5%, respectively for the two Australian partners.

Capacity will be doubled under the scheme for Western Australia’s Water Corporation. It is designed to secure the future water needs of  communities stretching from the Perth metropolitan area to the Goldfields.

The first stage of the plant was completed by the same consortium over the last two and a half years at a cost of €750m, on  time and under budget, and will be fully operational  for 25 years beginning November 2011.

The consortium will be responsible for the design, turnkey construction, operation and maintenance of the plant, including the water pipelines and other infrastructure needed to integrate the desalination plant with the area’s supply system.
