Steel framework of £34m Derby school takes shape

17 Aug 11 Work is well under way on the steelwork of a £34 million new school campus in Derby.

Steelwork specialist Robinson Steel Structures has been contracted by Balfour Beatty Construction to design, fabricate and build the 1,200-tonne steelwork structure and metal decking for the facility at Alvaston, Derby, which will house two existing schools: Noel-Baker Community School and St Martin’s Special School.

Robinson is fabricating and installing the steelwork structure and metal decking as well as supplying precast flooring units and stairways.

The team has completed the steelwork for the two- and three-storey main building which incorporates three atrium areas. Work has also started on the steel structure of a separate two-storey building which will accommodate vocational courses and a new sports centre. The new school will open in September 2012.
