Tunnelling set to start for Moscow metro

29 May 12 Assembly of a Herrenknecht tunnel boring machine (TBM) is almost complete ready for tunnelling between the Lermontovsky Prospekt and Vykhino subway stations in Moscow.

Specialists with SK Most are completing assembly the TBM assembly at Lermontovsky Prospekt station from where it will drive the left inter-station tunnel.

The parts of the shield were delivered from Germany. One of the major parts, the rotor designed for soil cutting and grinding, was assembled on last week. The rotor cutting diameter is 6.15m, the rotor weight is 57t and the entire machine weighs 508t.

Liebherr LTM 1500 and Liebherr LTM 1220 lifting cranes were used for rotor assembly.

The tunnelling is to start in June, and 1,800m of tunnel will have to be driven from Lermontovsky Prospekt station to Vykhino station. Installation of reinforced concrete lining will follow tunnelling.
