UAE tenders three rail contracts

30 Jul 12 The UAE’s national railway developer and operator, Etihad Rail, has issued invitations to tender for the first three contracts for the next stage of its rail network.

The three invitations to tender, which were issued to all prequalified companies include design and build contracts for new lines between Ruwais and Ghweifat (137km) and Liwa Junction and Al Ain (190km). The third contract is for railway integration and systems, covering signalling, communications and commissioning this second stage of the network.

Construction of Stage Two is scheduled to begin early next year. The tendering of the first stage two contracts follows the start earlier this year of construction works near Mirfa in the western region for the network's first stage. Stage One of the network is being developed in partnership with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, which will adopt rail as the main means for transporting granulated sulphur from Shah and Habshan to the port of Ruwais for export.
