8 Aug 11 Construction union Ucatt has appointed Cheryl Pidgeon its regional secretary for the Midlands Region.

Mrs Pidgeon is the first woman to be appointed to the position of regional secretary by the traditionally male-dominated union.

She was previously the TUC regional secretary for the Midlands and stood as the Labour candidate for Erewash in the 2010 general election.

Mrs Pidgeon said: “I am delighted to undertake this role for Ucatt. The challenges facing construction workers in the Midlands are as great as in any other part of the country. For too long many construction employers have believed that they have carte blanche to hire and fire construction workers at will, ignoring even the most basic employment rights. Construction workers who join Ucatt will have their rights fully defended.”

She added: “Construction workers are highly skilled and dedicated workers and play a vital role in the UK economy. It is essential that workers are properly paid and properly treated. If the industry is going to fully recover from the recession, then construction companies need to be recruiting and fully training a far higher number of apprentices in order to meet future demand.”
