UK competitors take work from Irish contractors

19 Jul 11 While many in the UK complain about an overly diligent application of European Union competition laws that sees many major contracts lost to foreign businesses, there is at least one EU country where UK construction companies are getting a hefty slice of the action at the expense of local firms.

According to a report in the Irish Independent this morning, almost one in five school building jobs in the Republic of Ireland awarded last year went to UK firms from Northern Ireland.

Out of a total of 80 contracts, 15 went to companies from the North. Two went to Glasgiven McAvoy from County Down, which is also working on a further four schools projects this year.Western Building Systems from Co Tyrone has won work on six schools this year.

Other Northern Irish winners down south include Francis Haughey and McCann.
