Vietnam awards $1.2bn power station contract

30 May 12 A consortium of Daelim and Sojitz has signed a US$1.2bn contract to build a power plant in Vietnam.

The contract for the construction of the Thai Binh 2 thermoelectricity plant was signed with PetroVietnam National Oil & Gas Group (PVN).

Thai Binh 2 will be Vietnam’s largest coal-fired thermoelectricity plant and will have a capacity of 1,200MW. Daelim will construct two plants - each with a capacity of 600MW – at the site 170km southeast from Hanoi.

Steam turbines will be supplied by Sojitz and the construction will be implemented by Petrovietnam Construction.

Daelim vice chairman Yoon Kim said: “We had won an order for the construction of Rach Gia Harbor of Vietnam in 1966 and sent the deposit to the Bank of Korea, which became Korea’s first acquisition of foreign currencies. I believe that this project will allow us to enhance our competitiveness in receiving new orders in Vietnam and Southeast Asia where needs for the construction of power plants is sharply increasing.”
