Wimpey Mining (archive action video)

I came across this video on regular Digger blog reader Edward Duckworth’s Facebook page, and simply couldn’t resist popping it on the blog for all to see.

The video was filmed around 1987 at the Ffoslas open cast coal mine which was situated near the village of Trimsaran in Wales. At this time Wimpey were conducting field production trails to evaluate the Terex 33-11E and the Caterpillar 777B 85 ton class dump trucks, which would be bought on completion of the trials to replace their ageing fleet of Terex R50 50 ton class dump trucks. On that occasion the Caterpillar trucks won the day and a number of them were ordered on the strength of the trials.

The trucks can be seen being loaded by one of Wimpey Mining’s Ruston Bucyrus 195RB face shovels, later on in the video there is also footage of a P&H 1900AL electric powered face shovel and also an example of the famous Lima 2400 dragline in operation.

As an ex Wimpey employee myself I know there is still a lot of interest in the great old company, and the number of emails I have received about Wimpey plant in the 3 years I have been writing the Digger blog is further testament to that fact. So if any other readers have old Wimpey photos or videos to share please send them into us. I would be delighted to post your material here.
