Job Description
Senior Process & Mechanical Engineer - Waste & Healthcare Waste Treatment Location: Uganda - mostly remote, with periodic fieldwork
Contract: Contractor, approx. 12 months
Day rate: Competitive, dependent on experience
Start: Expected early 2027
The opportunity Allen & York is supporting an international engineering consultancy to appoint a Senior Process & Mechanical Engineer to an internationally funded waste infrastructure project in Uganda.
The project will design a new integrated facility that processes municipal waste (household and commercial rubbish) and includes a dedicated unit for treating healthcare waste. You'll lead the process and mechanical design, taking it from early feasibility through to a construction-ready design package, as part of a small senior team of specialists.
What you'll do
Design the waste sorting and organics processing lines, including the Material Recovery Facility (MRF), a plant that sorts mixed waste into recyclable materials
Produce mass-energy balances and process flow diagrams (PFDs), and size the process equipment
Lead the technology selection using multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA), a structured way of scoring options against technical, financial and regulatory criteria
Assess healthcare waste treatment options, comparing non-burn technologies such as autoclaving with controlled thermal treatment
Visit local healthcare facilities to understand how their waste is produced and handled
Make sure the design meets International Finance Corporation (IFC), World Bank and World Health Organisation (WHO) standards
Prepare performance specifications and contribute to the construction procurement documents
What you'll bring
A degree in Mechanical, Process or Chemical Engineering
Experience designing waste processing systems
Completed design projects for MRFs or other municipal waste processing plants
Completed design projects for healthcare waste treatment systems, such as autoclave, non-burn or dual-chamber incineration systems
Hands-on mass-energy balance modelling
Highly valued: several MRF and healthcare waste designs at municipal scale; certified clinical biosafety or infection control training; Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or equivalent, or eligibility to register.
Desirable: donor-funded or international development experience; experience in sub-Saharan Africa; composting, anaerobic digestion or mechanical biological treatment (MBT) design; based in East Africa.
Why apply?
A lead design role on a project with real public-health and environmental impact
A defined, part-time commitment that fits alongside other contract work
Mostly remote, with periodic fieldwork
