Senior Mechanical Engineer - Building Services

Location: Birmingham
Salary: £50,000-£58,000 + Car Allowance

The Role
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our growing Building Services team, supporting projects across the North-West and Yorkshire.

This is a high-autonomy role suited to an engineer who is confident operating at the interface between site, client and design team. You will play a key role in gathering technical information, assessing existing mechanical systems, advising clients and ensuring that accurate site intelligence feeds into the wider design process.

Working as part of a national MEP team, you will collaborate closely with established design teams while acting as the key mechanical technical contact across Northern-based projects.

The role is particularly suited to an engineer who enjoys being involved at the front end of projects, understanding how buildings and systems operate in practice and translating site conditions into practical engineering solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical site appraisals, condition surveys and technical feasibility assessments.
• Assess existing mechanical services, installations and building systems.
• Gather and interpret technical information to support design development.
• Produce clear and professional site reports, sketches, photographs and technical briefing documents.
• Act as the mechanical engineering lead in meetings with clients, architects, contractors and other stakeholders.
• Provide practical technical advice and identify potential mechanical solutions to site-based constraints.
• Liaise closely with the design team to ensure site information is accurately translated into design requirements.
• Review mechanical installations during construction to ensure alignment with design intent and required quality standards.
• Undertake periodic site inspections and provide technical observations and recommendations.
• Support projects through the full lifecycle, from initial site appraisal through design, construction, commissioning and handover.
• Coordinate mechanical requirements with electrical services, architecture, building surveying and other disciplines.

About You
You will have a strong background in mechanical building services design and engineering, combined with the confidence to work independently across multiple sites and projects.

You should have:

• Strong knowledge of mechanical building services and multidisciplinary coordination.
• Experience undertaking site surveys, technical assessments and inspections.
• The ability to interpret existing building conditions and identify practical engineering solutions.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• The ability to produce clear, professional technical reports and documentation.
• Confidence representing an organisation independently in front of clients and project teams.
• A proactive and practical approach to problem solving.
• A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel throughout the North.
• Experience working within a consultancy, contractor or similar building services environment.

Desirable

• Chartered status or working towards professional registration with CIBSE or IMechE.
• Existing knowledge of the construction market across the North of England.
• Established relationships with contractors, consultants or other construction professionals.
• Broader understanding of electrical services and multidisciplinary building design.
• Experience working on projects from initial feasibility through to commissioning and handover.
