The £600 million revamp of Birmingham’s New Street station has been given the planning green light by the city council.
The Gateway scheme involves the construction of a new concourse in the multi-storey car park next to the station, and is scheduled to be complete in 2012.
The redevelopment of the old concourse will follow, with the whole project expected to be finished by 2015.
The revamp will double passenger capacity, creating a concourse that is three-and-a-half times bigger than the present one.
The Gateway project is backed by Network Rail, Birmingham City Council, Advantage West Midlands, Centro and the Department for Transport. Client for the scheme is Network Rail.
