Birse has been awarded a £7m contract to carry out improvement and maintenance work on the Windsor and Eton relief road.

The scheme, which includes work on the Eton/Slough spur road, is funded by central government. Client is Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.

Construction work includes renovating and upgrading bridges, waterproofing, resurfacing, erecting safer barriers, and planting of trees.

Additionally, Birse will improve the lighting, signage and landscaping along the road, which runs from junction 6 of the M4 to the Clarence Road roundabout. The project aims to reduce noise levels for residents who live near the road.

Work will begin this spring and is scheduled to finish by May 2011, in time for the 2012 Olympics when the relief road will be a key transport link to the rowing events at Dorney Rowing Lake.
