Shepherd Construction has won a £14.9m contract to build Bilston Leisure Centre on behalf of Wolverhampton County Council.

The new-build project will replace the existing leisure centre in Bilston and will be the first permanent building in the £175m urban village project, a 100-acre development that will create a new urban community including homes, employment opportunities, a primary and community care centre, a new Academy school, parkland and a high quality pedestrian boulevard to link with the town centre.

Construction work begins next week on the 5,600m² leisure centre, on vacant land off the Black Country Route. The centre will comprise an eight-lane, 25m swimming pool, learner pool, health and fitness suite, four squash courts, a sports hall, cafe and meeting room.

Once complete, in May 2011, the new facility will create 33 new full-time jobs.
