Aecom secures New Orleans streetcar design contract

20 Dec 11 Aecom has been awarded a US$10.6m contract to complete design work on the second phase of the New Orleans Streetcar expansion project.

Under the contract, the company will prepare final design documents for the second phase of the expansion, which spans more than a mile of the established Rampart/St Claude transit corridor in the heart of the city. The line will serve the French Quarter and other historic neighborhoods.

Aecom also will provide two environmental assessments for proposed future extensions of the St Claude line from Elysian Fields Avenue to Poland Avenue and for an extension of the Loyola Line from Loyola Avenue to Carondelet Street on Howard Avenue.

“We are honored to continue our long history of successfully delivering transit projects in New Orleans,” said Aecom chairman and chief executive officer John Dionisio. “This important project will help contribute to the ongoing revival and growth of New Orleans.”

The Loyola Line, which was already under construction before the Rampart/St. Claude expansion was announced, is funded by a Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER I) grant and was designed by Aecom.

Aecom has been involved with this streetcar program since the early master planning stage and played a significant role in the 2002 New Orleans Streetcar Extension on Canal Street. The design of the Loyola Line started in January 2011 with construction scheduled for completion during 2012. The second phase Rampart/St Claude corridor construction is scheduled for completion during August 2014.
