Henderson Global Investors is proposing to build a stepped 34-storey tower at 40 Leadenhall Street. The Cheesegrater is at number 122 Leadenhall Street. The Gherkin, at 30 St Mary Axe, and the Walkie Talkie, at 20 Fenchurch Street, are also nearby.

Estimated cost of building the latest tower, designed by Make Architects, is £391m. It would provide 910,000 square feet (84,500 square meters) of office and retail space.

It has already been dubbed ‘the toastrack’.

Subject to finding tenants, the aim is to start construction in 2012 and complete in 2019.
