Arizona moves forward with $1.8bn highway

2 Oct 15 Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has appointed a consultant to help with the procurement of the US$1.8bn (£1.2bn) South Mountain Freeway project.

HDR will serve as general engineering consultant for the 35km freeway, which will be first highway scheme procured under Arizona's public-private-partnership statute and ADOT's first design-build-maintain project. It is the largest, most complex construction project in ADOT history and is expected to create 30,000 jobs.

Services to be provided by HDR include assisting with procurement, design and construction administration processes, including multidisciplinary design oversight, resolution of claims and disputes, project management and risk analysis. Estimated completion date is in 2020.

Ken Smith, HDR's project manager, said, "We're honoured to be able to help ADOT deliver the first P3 and design-build-maintain project in the state. The entire region will benefit from having this last piece of the freeway in place."
