Balfour Beatty to build US uni digs

8 May 13 Balfour Beatty Construction and Metcon are to build a new hall of residence for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

The joint-venture partnership has been picked as construction manager at-risk for the 146,000-square-foot, 400-bed hall located on the campus.

The residence hall will have brick and precast concrete exterior and is designed to be consistent with other new buildings. Rooms will be configured in suite style, and each floor will include a classroom, laundry room, lounge and study as well as multi-purpose rooms. The residence hall is being designed and constructed to achieve LEED standards.

The construction team has established a goal of 25% participation for minority and women-owned businesses. Metcon is a Native American-owned business and will work with Balfour Beatty Construction’s director of diversity, Calvin Stevens, to meet the goal of achieving an inclusive workforce.

This is Balfour Beatty Construction’s second project in recent years on the UNC Charlotte campus. It has previously completed the university’s student union building.

The joint-venture team is currently completing the project’s preconstruction and design phases in partnership with LS3P Associates. The design team also includes LandDesign and Ayers Saint Gross with engineering services provided by Optima Engineering and Stewart Engineering.  Construction is targetted to start in December for completion in summer 2015.
