BDP wins two projects in China

7 Jul 11 BDP has secured the contracts for two new projects, in the Chinese city of Suzhou, west of Shanghai.

Each of the wins follows a competitive design process.

One is for the Suzhou Dushu Lake masterplan and involves a mixed-use high-density retail and residential development together with high-rise office and ground-level commercial uses. The development includes 3,000 residential units, 135,000m2 of office development,  two 220-room luxury hotels, along with multi-level shopping, a leisure centre and basement car parking on a 22ha site. At the heart of the scheme is an ecological park that connects to the waterfront.

The Suzhou Yinshan Lake sports centre is located within a sport-themed park overlooking the lake. The 4,600m2 leisure complex is based around an indoor sports hall on a site that has already been extensively landscaped.

The projects  were secured via the practice’s Shanghai studio, and will be delivered by BDP’s team in China in conjunction with the practice’s network of UK and global studios.

“BDP has a long history and excellent reputation within all the sectors that China is looking to develop; and projects like Liverpool One demonstrate how we can deliver large scale schemes sensitively and seamlessly,” said Shanghai Studio head Steve Gillham. “This is crucial in cities like Suzhou where a balance between respecting and preserving ancient assets, and the creation of new urban realm, needs to be carefully maintained.”
