Civils work down 17% in Germany

20 Dec 11 Civil and underground engineering demand in Germany decreased 17% in October compared with a year ago.

The value of building construction work increased 4.9% and Germany’s overall construction industry order value fell 6% according to the latest statistics from the Federal Statistical Office, Destatis. The total price-adjusted value of orders received by building construction and civil and underground engineering enterprises in Germany was down 6% in October from the same month of the previous year.

The number of employees in the sector amounted to 747,000 at the end of October 2011. That was an increase of 15,000 people, or 2%,  compared with October 2010.

Latest figures from the European statistics office, Eurostat, show that construction output was down by 1.4% in October compared with September in the eurozone and by 1.3% across all 27 countries.

Compared with October 2010, output in October 2011 decreased by 2.8% in the euro area and by 2.0% in the EU27.
