Early start for Billington's new boss

6 Nov 14 Structural steel group Billington Holdings chief operating officer Mark Smith is stepping up to become chief executive in the new year.

Mark Smith, aged 48, will become CEO on 1st January 2015 on the retirement of current CEO Steve Fareham.

The handover is six months earlier than planned. The company had previously announced that Mr Fareham would retire at the company's next annual general meeting next June 2015.

However, Mr Fareham will remain on the board of Billington as a non-executive director.

Mark Smith joined Billington in June 2014 from rival firm William Hare, where he was London operations director for four years. Before that, he spent 26 years with DA Green Steel & Cladding, latterly as commercial a director. DA Green went into administration in October 2010, four months after he left.

Steve Fareham said: “I have known and respected Mark for over 20 years and he has very quickly settled into his role with Billington. With his new team firmly in place and a growing confidence in the business, I have decided to bring my retirement date forward from the previously announced date of June 2015 to the 1st January 2015. After over 46 years with Billington I am absolutely delighted to be offered the role of non-executive director and look forward to continuing to support Mark and my co-directors in the future."
