Extra tunnels considered for HS2

5 Dec 11 The Department of Transport has reportedly postponed its decision on the £32bn High Speed 2 rail scheme until January to consider spending an extra £500m on tunnelling to help pacify opponents to the scheme.

The HS2 rail line has run into opposition from people living near the proposed route across the Chilterns between London and Birmingham - many of whom are remarkably well-heeled and close to their predominantly Tory MPs.

According to press reports, transport secretary Justine Greening has been persuaded that an extra 1.5 miles of tunnelling under the Chiltern Hills is worth considering.

Showing all the hallmarks of a lobby briefing campaign, there was no official statement from the department but Saturdays’ newspapers ran similar reports.
