Hotel win takes Balfour Beatty US order book to £3.5bn

23 Aug 13 Balfour Beatty Construction US and joint venture partner with Welbro Building Corporation have been picked to to build a new £207m hotel in downtown Houston, USA.

The contract for the 30-storey Houston Convention Center Hotel was awarded by RIDA Development Corporation. The 1,000-room hotel will attach to the convention centre via a skybridge.

Balfour Beatty chief executive Andrew McNaughton said: "Balfour Beatty's US construction business is performing very well and we have seen an increase in their order book to £3.5 billion. Our 2009 acquisition in Houston has delivered a strong pipeline of work in the thriving Texas market."

RIDA president Ira Mitzner said: "Balfour Beatty was chosen from among many other local and competent general contractors. Aside from their vast portfolio of hospitality projects and their professional team of construction experts, the difference that set Balfour Beatty apart was their engrained collaborative spirit and how well they mesh with our trusted partner contractor, Welbro."

Preconstruction of the project will be ongoing throughout the remainder of this year and into next, with ground-breaking anticipated in the first quarter of 2014. Construction will take approximately 26 months.
