John F Hunt has started remediation and ground engineering works to prepare the brownfield site for construction of a 620,000 sq ft industrial park.

The site has a long industrial history of coal mining, iron smelting and brick making since the James Bridge Copper Works opened there in 1917. It was in operation until 1999 and demolished soon after. The site has been a contaminated wasteland ever since.

It is reckoned to be the largest undeveloped brownfield plot in the Black Country and one of the most technically challenging.  John F Hunt Regeneration will treat areas of contamination and stabilise the numerous mine shafts in preparation for construction. The remediation works will significantly improve the environmental status of the site which is bordered by the Walsall Canal to the south and a school to the north.

Henry Boot is developing the Phoenix 10 business park, between J9 and J10 of the M6, for Walsall Council and Homes England.

John F Hunt Regeneration managing director Sam Hall said that it was a complex project but would “unlock a large industrial legacy site that has sat unwanted for decades”.
