No further explanation has been given but chairman Adrian Martin wished him well, saying: "The board would like to thank Paul for his considerable contribution to the development of the group over the last 13 years and wishes him the very best for the future."
Mr Whitmore, a chartered surveyor, joined the board of Morgan Sindall Group in April 2000. Before that he was with John Laing for 27 years, latterly as chief executive of Laing Construction.
