Re-roof for Raven Mill

20 Apr 12 Sika Liquid Plastics has worked with Quality Assured Contractors Surface Protection Coatings to re-waterproof the roof of Raven Mill in Oldham.

Raven Mill is used as the goods return centre for a large international mail-order organisation and was originally built in 1905. The existing single ply membrane on the roof of the mill was full of holes and leaking badly but due to the 24 hour operations taking place in the building below it was not possible to completely strip the roof.

“Our client was looking for a solution that could be installed whilst the building was in use without causing any major disruption,” comments Jim Kennedy, Managing Director at Surface Protection Coatings. “Reinstating waterproof integrity was absolutely crucial due to the high value of the goods stored below. It also meant security on site was high and the timescale to complete the project was tight.”

A Root Resistant Decothane Delta 25 system from Sika Liquid Plastics was specified for the project. The cold applied, liquid membrane cures to provide guaranteed waterproof protection and its root resistant properties make it ideal for installation on an inverted roof system such as the one on Raven Mill.

Due to its cold application, Decothane can be safely and easily installed whilst the building is in use without causing disruption to the activities below. Furthermore the existing ballast on the roof could be re-used once the new Decothane membrane had been installed to further reduce disruption and keep costs down.
