Wessex Demolition & Salvage is demolishing the six-storey Grosvenor House building in Grosvenor Square.
Part of the building gave way and burst through the protective sheeting and scaffold shrouding the structure. Traffic had to be diverted and a neighbouring building evacuated.
It is understood that no one was injured. The contractor has declined to comment.
