Van Oord team lands $1.5bn Suez Canal expansion contract

20 Oct 14 A consortium consisting of Van Oord, Royal Boskalis Westminster, NMDC (Abu Dhabi) and Jan de Nul has landed a US$1.5bn (£932m) contract as part of the expansion of the Suez Canal.

Each partner will take an equal share in the contract for the expansion of the shipping link between Europe and Asia.

The ‘new’ Suez Canal will partially run in parallel to the current waterway and entails widening and deepening work. The contract includes the construction of a 50km parallel section of canal to allow ships to pass simultaneously in two directions. The team will also  widen and deepen of a number of existing sections to a depth of 24m.

The majority of the dredging activities for the canal expansion will be executed with 17 cutter suction dredgers. The project will begin this year and is expected to be completed in 2015.
