Wates wins Kirklees PFI housing deal

22 Dec 11 Wates Living Space is to build 466 new affordable homes under a PFI deal with Kirklees Council.

Wates will undertake construction as part of the Regenter Excellent Homes for Life consortium alongside Regenter and Pinnacle PSG.

It is Wates’ second housing PFI deal in recent weeks, having just started on the £113m Gateways to Oldham project as part of the Inspiral Oldham consortium.

Wates Living Space managing director Ian Burnett said: “Our expertise in delivering quality affordable housing has really shown dividends as we reach the end of 2011. These two important PFI projects demonstrate a step change in the way affordable housing can be delivered and we are proud to be part of that. Each has the potential to make an immensely positive impact upon neighbourhoods and communities and we hope to use our involvement to create tangible benefits for local people.”

Kirklees Council’s Excellent Homes for Life project includes the new build of 140 homes for older people within three extra care housing schemes offering care and support, 291 one and two bedroom homes for small households and 35 homes specifically designed for wheelchair users. The new homes will be built on 27 sites across Kirklees.

In Oldham, Wates is working with Regenter and Great Places Housing Group on the £113m Gateways to Oldham project. This will see 317 new council homes and 322 refurbished council homes as well as enhanced recreational facilities and management and maintenance of the estates over the 25-year period.
