Kirkland joins DfT board

12 Jun 13 John Kirkland, chairman of construction contractor Bowmer & Kirkland, has joined the board of the Department for Transport as a non-executive director.

His first meeting is today, 12 June 2013, alongside lead non-executive director Sam Laidlaw and other non-executives Ed Smith, Alan Cook and Sally Davis. Also joining the board for the first time is Mary Reilly, who has recently retired as a partner at Deloitte and was chair of the London Development Agency.

John Kirkland has been a director of Bowmer & Kirkland since 1970 and chairman since 1976. As well as his construction interests, he also owns four security companies in the USA under the Soncell umbrella. He was chair of both Derbyshire Learning & Skills Council (LSC) from 2000 to 2008 and the LSC East Midlands Regional Board from 2004 to 2008. He was also a director of Derby County Football Club from 1981 to 2002 and became president in 2006, until the club was sold in 2008.
