The new Sixth Form Centre ‘MC6’ will specialise in AS and A Levels, providing students from across the Tees Valley, access to some of the best teaching facilities the UK.
The contract - part of the college’s plans for education in the area - is a new build incorporating the preserved façade of one of the town’s historic Victorian buildings which will add character and interest to the centre.
Ian Jubb, Regional Managing Director – North, Miller Construction, said: “We are delighted to be undertaking works on behalf of Middlesbrough College to deliver their new Sixth Form Centre. Miller Construction prides itself on its reputation in the delivery of exceptional learning environments. We look forward to building a successful partnership with the college, which will see us deliver outstanding facilities for students and staff alike.”
Zoe Lewis, Deputy Principal said: “The College is thrilled to see the work start on site and looks forward to the opening of an academic and sporting centre of excellence, which will complement our existing state-of-the-art vocational facilities”.
Due for completion in September 2012, the new Sixth Form Centre will provide 13 classrooms, tutorial rooms, staff and administrative office space, an IT suite, a student lounge, café, and sports facilities, including a full size flood lit astro-turf pitch. It is anticipated the new centre will attract 300 more students into AS and A Levels in the town and allow the College to offer a wider range of subjects.
Chris Webster, Chief Executive, Miller Construction, said: “Securing the contract at Middlesbrough Sixth Form College reinforces our reputation as an industry leader in the education market. Our strategy sees us focussing on our seven key markets and this contract win reiterates our unrivalled delivery of education environments.
“We have delivered a number of prestigious colleges in the North East including East Durham College and the award winning Hartlepool Sixth Form College and Hartlepool College of Further Education. Most recently, Hartlepool Sixth Form College was awarded Civic Building of the Year at the 2011 SCALA awards (Society of Chief Architects of Local Authorities) as well as securing a Silver Considerate Constructors Scheme award.
“Hartlepool College of Further Education has the prestigious accolade of being Runner Up to the Most Considerate site in the UK in 2011. Award recognition is a great achievement for our site teams and our clients but our driver is the delivery of quality educational facilities year after year, which benefit learners, staff and local communities.”
In September, the college marked the start of preparation works on site in advance of the main build, with a ground breaking ceremony, in which Principal /.Chief Executive, Mike Hopkins marked the beginning of construction.
Miller Construction also will work with the College to encourage students to become involved in the project by offering opportunities to learn about the construction industry whilst promoting construction as a career choice.
The new Sixth Form Centre will be constructed opposite the existing College, running along Dock Street between Lower East Street and Commercial Street.
