Putney Hospital development to start this year

28 Mar 12 The former Putney Hospital site on Putney Common in southwest London is to be converted into a primary school and apartments.

Wandsworth Borough Council has called for expressions of interest from contractors.

The hospital has been vacant since 1998 and has now been bought by the council. The council has also struck a deal with the Commons Conservators to allow access across the common, and for common land to be used during demolition and construction work. A piece of land in Stag Lane will be sold to the conservators to make up for it.

The scheme also includes 24 flats at the northern end of the site for which planning permission was obtained in July 2010.  Proceeds from the sale of the flats will help pay for the school.

The school will be an academy, independent of local authority control. It will provide 420 primary places from 2015 for children living in the west of the borough.

The council is aiming to start construction before the end of the year and complete by April 2015.

A bidders information day is being held on 13 April 2012 at All Saints Church, Putney Common. See the project website for details.
