A construction worker has died after becoming trapped in a collapsed trench on a road in Bradford, West Yorkshire.
A major operation was launched to rescue the 23-year-old man, witnessed by his family.
The trench had collapsed on the worker at around 1130 yesterday morning, but despite emergency services battling for several hours, he was dead by the time they reached him.
A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that the body of a 23-year-old local man has been recovered from the trench.
"It is believed the man had been working in the trench at the time of the incident.
"Inquiries are currently ongoing to establish how the events came about."
Police and the Health & Safety Executive have begun investigating the incident.
